Patch vs. fix
If the spine is in an abnormal position, it will put undue stress on the spinal cord and spinal nerves, which include disc and facet mechanoreceptors. This abnormal influence on the nervous system can participate in all forms of ill health.
Once a person realizes that their spine is a very serious consideration for a life of health, they should have a thorough examination which includes standing spinal x-rays. These x-rays should then be evaluated using scientific models researched and published through the Chiropractic BioPhysics Foundation. From this evaluation, an understanding of the status and degree of abnormal, incorrect, and unhealthy can be discussed.
Patch care is getting just enough care to start to change the symptom picture. This is usually fairly intense care that lasts anywhere from one visit to daily visits for a few weeks. Once relief is obtained you may quit care, but the original abnormal spinal position most likely is still abnormal. Given time, the stress and irritation causing symptoms that brought you to the office in the first place will return. We know this because of gravity and movement. Patch care can then be attempted for relief again.
Fix care is spinal care that continues beyond relief to attempt to return the spine to as near normal as possible. It can often take 9 to 18 weeks of 3 to 4 times a week spinal adjustments, exercise, and traction to get maximum improvement in spinal position. This is only known if post x-rays are performed exactly like the initial x-rays to compare spinal position. People who proceed with a plan to get their spines back to as near normal as possible typically have much better long-term results in respect to their spinal health.
Life is Dynamic
As one starts to learn about spinal health and how it affects our overall health, we have to discuss STRESS. There are many kinds of stress: physical stress, chemical stress, emotional stress, and spiritual neglect. These stresses are capable of occurring daily, through-out the day causing tension, abnormal posture, fatigue, and abnormal nerve function. If these adaptations of the body go unchecked, they will develop chronic abnormal ill-health patterns. These can be easily observed by watching a person’s posture and noticing changes in how they move. And, if unchecked these changes can lead to pathology and disease. Because stress is ever present in everyone’s life and it is our nervous system that allows us to adapt, we believe that maintenance of the spine is critical to a healthy life plan. For many people, that involves once a month spinal check-ups.
Why Chiropractic?
It is no surprise that our current health care system is dominated by the selling of drugs. There is just sooo much money in selling drugs. Everywhere you look you will find drug advertisements. Unfortunately, there is an often overlooked point….. and that is this: the more drugs you take, the more unhealthy you become. One of the most common comments that occurs in our office is that “now that you have had the best medicine can offer, the best drugs, the best surgeries, at great cost…. This is the shape you are in!” What gets missed is all the things that allow us to stay healthy. There isn’t a lot of money in teaching people to eat better, exercise better, sleep properly, use orthotics, breathe with their diaphragm, slow down and chew more, and take your spinal care seriously. Therefore, you won’t see a lot of Chiropractic propaganda and advertisements. But somehow we continue to serve lots of people and reasonable people realize that coming under Chiropractic care is not a miracle cure or panacea, but just a reasonable way to be a bit healthier.
Above all else, don’t poison yourself
Eating should start by considering how to nourish our bodies. A study of human anatomy and physiology quickly shows that humans were designed to be primarily plant-based eaters. The best source of fiber, vitamins, minerals, and enzymes are in fruits and vegetables. It is also very important to eat a large percentage of your diet in an uncooked form. This can be as simple as a bowl of cut fruit for breakfast, and a salad which includes all kinds of chopped vegetables for lunch. The current government recommendations for fruit and vegetable intake are 9 servings per day. It requires a serious commitment to accomplish this, but good health comes with that effort.
If you are letting your families eat fast food, processed food, heavily sugared drinks and whatever diet is currently popular there is a good chance that you are creating toxic soup, right in your own body. So stop, come to our Monday night health classes or get our online electronic newsletter and start a plan for good health.
You will never know unless you try
Participating in Chiropractic spinal care makes a lot of sense to many people. At times we see people really struggle with the idea of spinal care, diet, nutrition, exercise, and the follow-through. They choose not to listen, learn, or get care. They come for one or two visits hoping that their years of poor health or their serious condition may somehow miraculously go away. If after 2 or 3 visits it hasn’t, somehow this proves to them that spinal care doesn’t work. This is unfortunate, because they really haven’t tried and the value and benefit is going to be completely missed.
There is no magic in spinal care. Yes, sometimes we see what appears to be a miraculous result. The cancer patient that improves quickly, the deaf person that begins to hear again after 1 visit, the patient that has been bed ridden for years that gets up and walks. But for most people, the changes are more progressive and steady. As they try, listen, learn, and make changes, they gradually notice that they are able to live their lives, do the things they want to do and not find that each day is painful. It is not fair to guarantee the timing or amount of results each person might realize. You will never know how much help and health you can receive unless you try.
Dinner with the Docs
Once a month, we invite up to 12 patients into our home for dinner. We enjoy an evening together, sharing stories and chuckles, as well as teaching and showing dietary plans and discussing healthy lifestyle options. For more information or to sign up for a dinner, please contact one of the gals at Country Chiropractic Clinic.
